Like every other year, this year too, retailers are gearing up to make the most of the upcoming holiday season. In this regard, Nordstrom Inc. JWN announced plans to employ roughly 11,800 seasonal workers to handle the crazy holiday rush.
Approximately 10,000 seasonal employees will be recruited for Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack stores across the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, the company plans to hire about 1,750 workers for its fulfillment centers to support its eCommerce operations and HauteLook. Further, Nordstrom intends to add nearly 100 staff to its Trunk Club outlets.
These seasonal roles will include both part-time and full-time positions, with the opportunity for some workers to become regular employees. The Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company thinks that this improved staffing will help it to better serve customers during the busy time of the holidays.
We note that during the holiday season, retailers are on their toes, flooding the markets with offers and promotions. They sweep buyers off their feet with early-hour store openings, huge discounts, promotional strategies, and free shipping on online purchases. Since the season accounts for a sizeable chunk of yearly revenues and profits, retailers grab every opportunity to drive footfall.
Moreover, given the rebounding U.S. economy, the retail space is brimming with optimism and hence, retailers will leave no stone unturned to make the most of this season. A gradual recovery in the housing market and manufacturing sector, along with an improving labor market and lower gasoline prices, has been favoring the economy and playing key roles in raising buyers’ confidence.
Apart from Nordstrom, other retail bellwethers like Macy’s Inc. M, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. WMT, and Kohl’s Corp. KSS, among others have adopted the same strategy to tap maximum holiday sales. While Macy’s plans to add 85,000 seasonal staff, Wal-Mart and Kohl’s announced seasonal hiring of 60,000 and over 69,000 staff, respectively, for the upcoming shopping rush.
