PPG Industries Launches Sigma Sailadvance Coatings

PPG Industries, Inc.’s PPG protective and marine coatings business has launched the Sigma Sailadvance high-performance antifouling coatings portfolio for several operating conditions.

The range consists of four types of coatings based on their formulations. Among these, the Sigma Sailadvance RX and GX are newly formulated coatings based on PPG Industries’ proprietary technologies, while the Sigma Sailadvance MX and DX coatings are remodeled versions of the Sigma Syladvance 700 and 800 products.

The Sigma Sailadvance RX and GX coatings are formulated with self-release binder technology utilizing controlled surface active polymers (CSPs) to provide the paints with self-lubrication and self-release mechanism. The CSPs acts as a lubricant on the coating-water lining, thereby lowering hull friction for the ship during sailing. In addition to this, the CSPs generate average fuel savings of 5%. Further, these impart superior resistance to fouling for idle ships by creating a slippery surface.

According to Tom Molenda, PPG Industries’ global marine director, the Sigma Sailadvance coatings range has been developed to cater to the market demand as ship-owners are looking to cut back on energy consumption and reduce their total costs no matter whether their ships are operating or idle. The Sailadvance RX and GX coatings meet all the above-mentioned requirements regardless of whether the ship is sailing, idle or slow steaming, and may be applied during new construction or dry docking.

Moreover, the Sigma Sailadvance coatings range is suitable for ships of all types and operating speeds. It is especially appropriate for slow-steaming ships due to their CSP composition. The coatings also gain from high-volume solids which deliver a pattern of linear polishing, with steady biocide release for predictable performance for up to 90 months.

The Sigma Sailadvance MX and DX coatings offer benefits similar to the Sigma Syladvance 700 and 800 products, but for a wider number of operating profiles.

PPG Industries currently carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

Better-ranked stocks in the chemical space include Stepan Company SCL, LyondellBasell Industries N.V. LYB and Orion Engineered Carbons SA OEC, all sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
