Waste Management Launches CNG Truck Fleet in Waterloo

Waste Management, Inc. WM launched a new fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (“CNG”) fuelled trucks, representing an investment of over $13 million in the community.

The fleet includes 28 CNG-fuelled vehicles that will service the Region of Waterloo, Guelph and adjacent areas, and represents another step forward in Waste Management’s long-term sustainability strategy. The new fleet will reduce carbon emissions from the company’s heavy-duty vehicles.

The fleet was unveiled at the company’s facility on Conrad Place in Waterloo.

Since over two decades, Waste Management has been a leader in integrating natural gas as fuel in its fleet. Its North American fleet has over 32,000 collection and support vehicles, 18,500 of which are committed to collection activities.

Waste Management has the biggest heavy-duty truck fleet in North America, and now has almost 4,100 of its vehicles running on natural gas. In Ontario, the company has 79 CNG-powered vehicles and is expecting to expand that to 111 later this year. It operates 73 CNG fueling stations in North America, with two of them situated in Ontario.

The company is dedicated to cutting down emissions, enhancing fuel efficiency and transitioning its fleet to natural gas, thus reducing the negative environmental impact of its vehicles.

The use of diesel fuel is cut by about 8,000 gallons per year on an average, for every vehicle that is converted to natural gas. This decreases greenhouse gas emissions per truck by more than 22 metric tons per year. Vehicles that run on CNG emit almost zero particulate emissions and reduce smog-producing nitrogen oxide emissions by 50% relative to the cleanest diesel trucks. They also decrease greenhouse gas emissions by over 20%, and are much quieter than diesel trucks.

Over 90% of Waste Management’s new truck purchases are going to be natural gas vehicles, in keeping with its commitment to natural gas vehicles.

Waste Management carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), and competes with Stericycle, Inc. SRCL, Republic Services, Inc. RSG and Waste Connections Inc. WCN.
