In order to accelerate its research & development activity, Ericsson ERIC collaborated with Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa to jointly innovate integrated photonic 5G technology. Under this new alliance, Ericsson and Scuola are researching and prototyping groundbreaking photonic modules, components and subsystems to aid the development of 5G system.
In particular, both the entities will focus on developing cost-effective mobile Fronthaul and Backhaul solutions in Radio Access Network (‘RAN’) as well as ultra-fast data center interconnectivity. Over 100 researchers are assisting Ericsson and Scuola in this venture.
The above-mentioned deal represents a unique collaboration between industry and academy. The successful execution of the research process for network optical technologies will aid the telecom operators in catering to the rising data needs. The advancement of optical technology will enhance the 5G experience and thereby deploy the full potential of the Networked Society. Notably, by 2020, the mobile subscribers are projected to rise to over 9 billion, with 26 billion connected devices.
With the emergence of the Smartphone market and subsequent usage of mobile broadband, the user demand for coverage speed and quality has increased in recent times. Further, to maintain superior performance as traffic increases, there is also a continuous need for network tuning and optimization. Ericsson, being one of the premier telecom services providers, is much in demand among operators to expand network coverage and upgrade networks for higher speed and capacity. The company offers either a network upgrade to 4G and 5G or establishment of an advanced broadband portfolio altogether to match up to customer demand.
Encouragingly, Ericsson is the founding member of the leading initiatives for the 5G development globally. Also, the company along with other educational institutions incepted the cross-industries 5G initiatives for Sweden. Previously, Ericsson penned a joint research deal with King's College London in UK and Technische Universität Dresden in Germany for 5G technology.
