After being selected to provide 100G optical transport network for one of Thailand’s leading telecom companies, Advanced Info Service Public Company Limited (AIS), Alcatel-Lucent is now all geared up to deploy small cells technology for the company.

In a bid to improve the cellular service of Thailand’s tourism-driven economy, Alcatel-Lucent plans to provide AIS with its 9764 Metro Cells Outdoor and 5620 Service Aware Manager. In addition, Alcatel-Lucent will extend its profound technical expertise to ensure high-quality cellular service for the operator. AIS plans to use the full range of Alcatel-Lucent’s LightRadio portfolio including home cells, enterprise cells as well as outdoor cells.
By seeking Alcatel-Lucent’s service, AIS is pioneering the deployment of small cells technology in entire Thailand ahead of its peers. In an effort to outshine rivals, AIS began the deployment of small cells from Sep 2014, having already deployed 500 units till date. Encouragingly, within 2015, AIS plans to deploy 3000 cells to enhance the capacity of its 3G Network.
The popularity of small cells stems from their competence to deliver cellular signals in areas where traditional coverage is insufficient or blocked on account of geographical features like tall buildings or distance from cell towers. Apart from this, these cells hold excellent reputation for boosting capacity of networks in areas that have large concentration of users.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the country is a thriving tourist destination with a 16% increase in tourists in Jan 2015 alone. This exerts pressure on conventional cellular service providers to satiate customers with cost-effective service in busy areas including tourist destinations, shopping malls, other urban areas and villages.
