After adding 3D Capture application capabilities to its Sprout computing system earlier this month, technology giant Hewlett-Packard Co. HPQ has added a set of applications to it. Besides enhancing user experience, these will also expand the 3D Ecosystem for both consumers and professionals.

The latest applications comprise Crayola Color Alive, Ideum Origami Apprentice, Mobile5 SizeUp, Mischief for Sprout, Sprout Stop Motion, Sprout Light Stencil and Sprout Video Capture, all of which will be available this summer. These solutions have been designed keeping in mind the requirements of diverse consumers, ranging from professionals like engineers, designers and architects to common people using the technology for home or school.

The Sprout device combines a high-resolution camera, a depth sensor, a 3D scanner, projector and a multi-touch pad into a single PC. Sprout’s unique PC 3D scanning capability is especially useful for graphic designers. It enables 3D scanning and capture of items of various sizes and creates instant 3D printables. The 3D scanning solution incorporates Intel INTC Real Sense 3D cameras that allow users to scan and obtain 3D digital prints of objects on the go.

Sprout was initially previewed at a New York event in Oct 2014 and helps to scan wirelessly, enhancing the entire picture taking experience.

Eric Monsef, of Highly Immersive Systems, H-P said that "These new applications continue to expand HP's immersive computing ecosystem." And again,"Both small and industry leading app developers are drawn to the platform as it unlocks unique, immersive experiences for both consumers and professionals."

Hewlett-Packard is known for its impressive product development capabilities. In order to maintain its brand appeal, the company focuses on innovation and expansion of its product portfolio. The company believes that with consistent product innovation, it will deliver strong results over the long term. These innovations often result in significant market share gains, provide competitive advantage, and also, at times, redefine their respective product categories.

Its new product launches should help Hewlett-Packard move toward high-margin business, while simultaneously cutting its dependence on the PC market.

We also believe that the new offerings will help Hewlett-Packard simplify the complexity associated with the management of IT assets and consumer electronics, in accordance with environmental and data security regulations.

Apart from this, we remain optimistic about Hewlett-Packard’s strong business model, as well as its leadership position in both PC and Server segments. The company is also expected to benefit from PC refresh cycles.

However, increasing competition from companies like International Business Machines IBM and Oracle Corp. ORCL coupled with continuing macroeconomic challenges and tepid IT spending will pose challenges, going forward.

Hewlett-Packard carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
