Emerson Electric Co.’s EMR business unit, Emerson Process Management, disclosed the acquisition of Energy Solutions International Holdings, Inc. (‘ESI’) to boosts its oil and gas transmission operations business. Both the firms kept the financial details of this deal under wraps.
ESI is one of the leading global providers of decision support software and services for boosting operational efficiency, commercial profitability and security in the oil and gas pipeline, storage, marketing and distribution functions. The company is well known for offering operational competence and financial profitability through an integrated suite of operational management applications for leak detection, scheduling and pipeline modeling and commercial applications for transactional accounting and inventory management.
Post acquisition-closure, ESI will be merged into Emerson Process Management and will operate as a part of the Remote Automation Solutions group that deals in offering oil and gas supervisory control and data acquisition (‘SCADA’) along with fiscal measurement solutions. We view the ESI buyout as a strategic fit for Emerson, given ESI’ veteran position in the oil and gas transmission operations business, and the manner in which it complements Emerson’s oil and gas SCADA business.
As a matter of fact, Emerson engages in mergers and acquisitions to tap growth opportunities. This is likely to influence it to grow its business and help it gain access to new technologies and markets across geographies. Moreover, the company introduces advanced innovative products to boost its position in core operating markets. In April-May, the company had come up with several new and modified product offerings. This comprises launch of a new SmartProcess oil and gas applications suite; CSI 3000 Machinery Health Monitor; and upgrade of FlowScanner 6000 valve diagnostic tool.
With such recent developments, we believe Emerson is trying to revamp its market position after it had recorded dismal second-quarter fiscal 2015 results, particularly due to spending cuts in the oil and gas and industrial markets. The company’s strategic product launches and acquisitions will likely allow it to penetrate newer markets and attract more customers, thereby improving its profitability.
Emerson currently has a Zacks Rank #5 (Strong Sell). Better-ranked stocks in the same sector include II-VI Incorporated IIVI, Capstone Turbine Corp. CPST and KBR, Inc. KBR. While II-VI Incorporated sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), Capstone Turbine Corp and KBR hold a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
