China-based photovoltaic ("PV") module producer Trina Solar Limited TSL was selected by Toyo Engineering Corporation to supply 116 MW of high efficiency modules to the largest solar power project in Japan. This solar project will be built in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture and will be managed by Setouchi Future Creations LLC.

The nearly 231 MW facility will utilize nearly 446,000 pieces of Trina Solar TSM-260PC05A high efficiency modules. Thanks to rigorous research and development, these high efficiency modules are capable of producing solar power even in low light conditions.

The solar project will be spread over an area of 260 hectares and is expected to start commercial operations from the second quarter of 2019. Following the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011 and the subsequent deactivation of all nuclear reactors, there has been increasing investment in renewable projects, primarily solar, in the country

Japan aims to add 28 Gigawatts (“GW”) of solar PV capacity by 2020 and 53 GW by 2030. Per a report from Clean Technica, nearly 11 GW of solar power projects were added in Japan within Jul 2012 and Jun 2014.

Japan is a densely populated country and finding land for large scale solar projects might pose a problem. However, a Japanese firm, Kyocera Corporation, has come up with an innovative solution. The company reclaimed land from the waters of Kagoshima Bay to develop the 70 MW Kagoshima Nanatsujima Mega Solar Power Plant.

We expect more solar projects to come online over the next few years backed by a supportive government. Trina Solar with its high quality solar modules is well poised to win more Japanese orders.

Trina Solar’s high quality modules are in demand. Its modules were recently selected for a solar farm in Panama (read:Trina Solar to Ship 9.9 MW Modules to a Panama Solar Farm).

Apart from Trina Solar, other Chinese solar companies like JA Solar Holdings Co., Ltd. JASO, Yingli Green Energy Holding YGE and JinkoSolar Holding Co. JKS are winning contracts from international customers at regular intervals for their high quality solar modules.

Trina Solar currently has a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
