ON Semiconductor (ONNN), Transphorm Develop GaN Products

Zacks

ON Semiconductor Corp. ONNN, in collaboration with Transphorm is ready with its gallium nitride (GaN) based solutions. At APEC 2015, Transphorm introduced the co-branded NTP8G202N (TPH3202PS) and NTP8G206N (TPH3206PS) 600 V GaN cascode transistors along with a 240 W reference design that uses them. Shares of ON Semiconductor were up 2.31% to $12.84.

The recent launch is based on an alliance announced by the companies in Oct 2014. The two companies had partnered to create and market GaN based products for a range of high power industrial, computing, telecom and networking applications. The interest in GaN stems from its efficiency in power conversion, especially at higher frequencies, which in turn helps to save costs.

Both 600 V transistors, NTP8G202N (TPH3202PS) and NTP8G206N (TPH3206PS) have on-resistances of 150 and 290 mOhms and are provided in an optimized TO-220 package. The package helps in easy incorporation with customers’ existing circuit board manufacturing capacities. Both products have been qualified utilizing JEDEC standards and are currently in mass production.

The launch comes at an opportune moment, when the buzz surrounding GaN based solutions seems to have reached a high. Recently another semiconductor company, Infineon Technologies AG IFNNY collaborated with Panasonic Corp. PCRFY for developing GaN devices. Also, Texas Instruments TXN or TI launched LMG5200 GaN FET power stage, the industry’s first 80-V, 10-A integrated GaN field-effect transistor (FET) power-stage model.

The new offerings will leverage GaN technology and help both the companies to speed up the adoption of their products, and thereby expand market share.

Transphorm is a company engaged in the development and marketing of modular power conversion products. Transphorm is also known for its progress in developing and bringing to market GaN solutions. The partnership has given ON Semiconductor access to GaN technology, which it can now use to extend its footprint in the power conversion segment.

Over the long term, ON Semiconductor is well positioned for growth and market share gains in all its end markets. Also, we expect the product launches and numerous design wins in communication, automotive and industrial markets to act as strong catalysts to generate relatively steady revenues in the near term.

Currently, ON Semiconductor carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
