AT&T on Track with SDN 2020 Plan for Network Virtualization

Zacks

U.S. telecom behemoth AT&T, Inc. T has stated that it is in line with its plan of virtualizing and controlling more than 75% of its network using software architecture by 2020. The carrier expects to accomplish its goal through the use of User-Defined Network Cloud – based on software-defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) technologies.

The User-Defined Network Cloud Supported builds on the company's Domain 2.0 supplier program. With this, AT&T is placing its customers at the center of the network with a contemporary, cloud-based architecture that is a global first at this level.

With this virtualization process, AT&T aims to construct a networking infrastructure that is more efficient and also cost-effective at the same time. This will enable it to rapidly create flexible new applications and services for customers, and provide services on demand designed to meet specific needs. Further, upgrades to customer services will entail updating the software rather than replacing hardware components.

Moreover, the company has been launching several innovative products in connection with the cloud effort, improving cycle time, flexibility and operational effectiveness. Recently, the company launched its breakthrough on-demand service – Network on Demand service in five states. With this, customers using a self-service app can simply order, add, or change network services as needed, in real time, over the cloud. Moreover, the company plans to roll out similar on-demand services for businesses in other additional markets in 2015.

AT&T is also collaborating with vendors and open-source bodies on standardization processes, including OpenStack, ON.Lab, OpenDaylight and OPNFV. AT&T is thus clearly leading the way in this space in the U.S. market, leaving behind the likes of Verizon Communications Inc. VZ, Sprint Corporation S and T-Mobile US, Inc. TMUS.
