General Motors Company’s (GM) Cadillac brand will utilize the most comprehensive and advanced mixed-material manufacturing techniques for the production of the new CT6 top-range sedan. With this, the automaker intends to offer a top-range, large luxury sedan which will deliver the efficiency of a smaller vehicle.

General Motors will be producing the new Cadillac CT6 at its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, utilizing a unique combination of joining techniques. This plant also manufactures the Cadillac ELR electrified luxury coupe alongside other products. The Cadillac CT6 will be commercialized from the fourth quarter of 2015.

In addition, new tooling and advanced technologies, including 205 robots have been added for its production. The company has invested $300 million in the plant for the development of new body construction techniques and technologies with different types of advanced and lightweight materials.

The material joining techniques used in the CT6 are patented aluminum spot welding technology, aluminum laser welding, self-piercing rivets, flow drill screws, aluminum arc welding and structural adhesive. The engineers have used the best joining method, depending on material combination and body location from among these technologies.
