SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Hack Reactor, the leader in immersive education for computer programming, announced today it has acquired MakerSquare, another leading coding school with campuses in San Francisco and Austin. The acquisition is the first to date by two-year old Hack Reactor. MakerSquare will continue to operate independently and will adopt and adapt Hack Reactor’s JavaScript programming curriculum.

Hack Reactor is an advanced immersive program that trains students 11 hours a day, 6 days a week, over 12 weeks in a curriculum focused on computer science fundamentals and JavaScript.

The MakerSquare acquisition marks the beginning of Hack Reactor’s “extension school” program, a partnership-based model to share Hack Reactor’s resources with other new or existing schools. Hack Reactor has issued a call for partnership applications from individuals and organizations, and they will work with interested parties to determine best next steps to create a network of schools that empower students and meet market demand for engineers.

“Coding bootcamps were estimated at $59mm total gross revenue for 2014 and that number will continue to rise,” said Hack Reactor CEO Anthony Phillips. “We’re collecting the best minds in the accelerated learning sector, and we’re proud to have MakerSquare on our team. MakerSquare and Hack Reactor are both leaders in terms of student outcomes, quality teaching and strength of alumni network. We share a vision for the future of education, software engineering and empowering students.”

MakerSquare started in 2013 when the founders identified Austin as an emerging technology market in need of highly qualified developers. Coming from different levels of experience learning to code, the founders wanted to create the learning experience they wish they had been able to access. MakerSquare expanded to San Francisco in 2014. Students at the Austin MakerSquare location have the option to live in the school’s Dev House, shared off-campus housing for the 60% of out-of-town students, during the 12-week program.

“The current higher education system does not sufficiently empower and serve people,” said MakerSquare CEO Harsh Patel. “This is a fact on a national and global level. I am confident that by joining Hack Reactor, together, we can make a large dent in transforming the old education system into one that focuses on student outcomes.”

The acquisition is currently pending regulatory approval.
