Acquisition of leading enforcement boutique Focus expands Burford’s capacity to meet strong demand for judgment enforcement solutions

Burford Capital Limited, the world’s leading provider of investment capital and risk solutions for litigation, today announces the expansion of its ability to help clients find assets and enforce judgments through the acquisition by one of its indirect subsidiaries of Focus Intelligence Ltd., a business intelligence firm that specializes in asset tracing and judgment enforcement worldwide.

Terms of the acquisition, which has already been completed, are confidential; the transaction is not financially material to Burford.

Focus’s London-based team of eight legal and investigative specialists will join Burford, and its co-founders Daniel Hall and Michael Redman will lead Burford’s global judgment enforcement business.

Judgment enforcement is increasingly a problem for lawyers and clients, who may win litigation claims but then face challenges in finding assets and enforcing judgments. Burford will now provide comprehensive services to assists clients around the world with these challenges:

  • Burford is prepared to purchase uncollected judgments and awards outright and then collect them at its own cost and risk
  • Burford is prepared to make its global judgment enforcement services available on a contingent basis, so that clients can make use of its best-in-class asset tracing and judgment enforcement services without cost or risk unless assets are recovered
  • Burford will continue to make Focus’s professional services-including asset tracing and recovery, enforcement intelligence, litigation and arbitration support, and expert insight to make more strategic decisions concerning commercial litigation and arbitration matters-available on a fee-for-service basis
