AT&T Conducts First LTE Broadcast Technology Trial in Texas

Zacks

On Jan 12, AT&T, Inc. (T) conducted the first live, on-site trial demonstration of LTE Broadcast technology during the college football national championship game between Oregon Ducks and Ohio State Buckeyes at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

Long-Term Evolution (LTE), the most sought after next-generation (4G) super-fast wireless communications technology, is rapidly gaining global momentum. 4G wireless networks primarily aim to cope with the substantial rise in demand for high-speed wireless data services and mobile video.

AT&T integrated its technology to provide customers with compatible devices, access to extra feeds, varying camera angles along with associated bonus recording. Specifically, with this trial, the carrier aimed at minimizing network clogging for proceedings catering to larger masses, by making use of the LTE Broadcast technology. This technology assigns a dedicated segment of wireless network resources to broadcast content that all compatible devices can access simultaneously.

LTE’s enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) could be thus used to allocate an extensive range of content, including music, video, and software, captured by any number of compatible devices that are within the range of the signal. Further, the technology is significantly more bandwidth-friendly than unicast streaming and can be used in the future for applications like large-scale software updates to smartphones and the broader Internet of Things (IoT) platform, which includes connected cars and other IoT devices.

Notably, the usage of the LTE Broadcast technology allows optimization of network resources. Its implementation will considerably lessen the WiFi required on-site, thereby lowering the company’s expenditure related to the service offered.

Interestingly, Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) was the first carrier to conduct the demonstration of its own LTE Multicast technology outside the MetLife Stadium for the Super Bowl and IndyCar Series race in 2014. However, Verizon suggested that commercial deployment of its technology would only happen around the end of 2015.

AT&T currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
