GE Aviation’s HUMS for Guangzhou Hangxin’s AC313 Fleet

Zacks

GE Aviation, an operating unit of General Electric Company (GE), was chosen by Guangzhou Hangxin Company/AVICopter to install the Health & Usage Monitoring System (HUMS) in their AC313 helicopter fleet in China.

Per the contract, General Electric will provide complete on-board and ground support analysis facilities for the aircraft. The HUMS will improve maintenance, planning and reduce downtime for the AC313 aircraft, thus enabling operators to keep their AC313 in the air.

HUMS enables operators to optimize parts inventory management and reduce dedicated test flights and asset recapitalization. This translates to significant savings in operating costs. It also boosts aircraft availability by improving turnaround times and enhancing operational readiness.

The AC313 civilian helicopter fleet is meant to be used for search and rescue operations, medical evacuations, disaster relief, VIP transport and forestry management. It can carry 27 passengers and two crew members.

General Electric’s technology dates back to 1991, when it spearheaded the development of the world’s first certified safety system, HUMS. Thereafter, the conglomerate developed an extensive portfolio of HUMS and combined HUMS/flight data recorder (FDR) systems, which are installed in over 25 civil and military helicopter types.

HUMS’ established capabilities in aircraft monitoring and diagnostics have been proven over time and provide significant maintenance, operational and safety advantages.

Other conglomerates like Honeywell International Inc. (HON) and United Technologies Corporation’s (UTX) Sikorsky also have the HUMS programs in place to provide diagnostic information required for optimum performance.

General Electric currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). A better-ranked conglomerate that is worth a look now includes Swire Pacific Limited (SWRAY), sporting a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
