PPG to Showcase Corrosion-Resistant Products at NAIAS

Zacks

PPG Industries Inc. (PPG) will feature new products during preview days at the 2015 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit’s Cobo Center from Jan 12-15.

The products that will be displayed include Powercron Advantedge And Powercron Epic Tin-Free Electrocoats that are formulated with a metal-free catalyst that will help manufacturers to cut energy use while complying with emerging environmental regulations.

The technology will enable the auto makers to act in accordance with new global environmental regulations, and it enables PPG’s ninth-generation e-coats to cure at temperatures as low as 320 F to reduce energy consumption and related carbon emissions. Both the products provide great corrosion resistance, a smooth film appearance and excellent workability along with improved throwpower for more uniform film builds on complex parts.

PPG Industries will also feature its proprietary Zinc-Rich Primer with Electrocoat at the show. This breakthrough technology of PPG is a duplex coating system, which considerably improves the corrosion resistance of high-end underbody parts, subframe finishes and other vulnerable parts on trucks and passenger vehicles.

The system is economical compared with galvanizing and plating in some applications and provides exceptional corrosion resistance on control arms, tie rods, steering knuckles and other components that are critical to the safety, durability and performance of trucks and automobiles. The system also facilitates cost efficiency.

Moreover, PPG will highlight the Metal Conditioner 257 (AMC257) that removes weld scale and light oxides from steel surfaces. As a mildly acidic pickle/descaler, Metal Conditioner 257 is non-fuming and easier to use than the conventional mineral-acid pickle solutions.

Another product that PPG will highlight at the NAIAS is the VERSABOND Pretreatment System that uses the latest zinc-phosphate hypernucleation technology to increase crystal formation and thereby reduce the production of sludge by up to 50% in some pretreatment systems. The system also helps in lowering processing temperatures by 10% to 20% and provides excellent corrosion resistance and adhesion due to its ability to uniformly deposit small, densely packed zinc-phosphate crystals.

PPG Industries has a diversified business and holds a leading position in several paints and coatings end markets. The company is benefiting from healthy momentum across major end-use markets such as automotive OEM, automotive refinish and aerospace and continued demand recovery in Europe.

PPG Industries currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).

Other companies in the chemicals space worth considering include Air Products & Chemicals Inc. (APD), Kronos Worldwide Inc. (KRO) and Valhi, Inc. (VHI), all holding a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
