Microchip Technology Inc. (MCHP) supported Automotive Grade Linux’s (AGL) open source project by joining The Linux Foundation with its innovative Linux driver technology. The initiative comes in the wake of the introduction of Linux-based software stack in connected cars.

Connected cars are modern vehicles equipped with wireless restricted area network and Internet access for devices placed in or out of it. Linux Foundation, a non commercial technology association, assists the growth of Linux technology. AGL is an open source project introduced by Linux Foundation, aimed at developing a Linux-based software heap for connected cars. This software would provide the infrastructure for a reliable and fast network in Internet-enabled connected cars.

Microchip Technology has contributed its own technological expertise toward AGL’s project. Backed by its in-depth long-term networking proficiency, the company’s Automotive Information System Division has invented a new Linux driver.

The driver facilitates MOST network technology, a specialized type of synchronous network, in any Linux environment. Enabled with MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) network tools, Microchip Technology’s new Linux driver supports accessibility to various kinds of data resources in a systematic pattern.

By joining the AGL program, Microchip Technology has augmented its competitive edge in the global Linux-based technology market. According to a projection by research firm IHS Inc. (IHS), Linux will lead the approximate130 million unit in-vehicle-infotainment market by 2020. Since adoption of Linux supports enhancement of automotive designers in an open-source ground, it is widely gaining in popularity with time.

Microchip Technology is one of the leading Flash-IP solution, mixed signal and microcontroller providers in the contemporary technology market. The company enjoys a strong goodwill in the semiconductor industry and owns a globally wide network of branches. The new invention will reinforce the company’s product portfolio and consequently, augment revenues and margins in the near future. By introducing the new Linux driver in the market, Microchip Technology triggered its innovation-oriented growth trajectory.

With a market capitalization of $8.65 billion, Microchip Technology currently holds a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). Some better-ranked stocks in the industry include M/A-Com Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. (MTSI), ON Semiconductor Corp. (ONNN), both carrying a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
