Yahoo, Bing Begin the New Year with a Brief Disruption

Yahoo! Inc.’s (YHOO) search engine and Microsoft Corporation’s (MSFT) Bing went kaput temporarily on the second day of the New Year.

The Domino Effect

Microsoft's Bing search engine powers Yahoo search as per a 10-year deal announced in 2009.

The blackout was essentially caused by a string of bad code update from Microsoft. As Yahoo's search is powered by Bing, it also bore the consequences.

This makes it a fascinating example of the domino effect among Internet giants.

Turn of Events

Users who typed search.yahoo.com on Friday afternoon got an error message which said that Yahoo engineers were working to resolve the issue.

According to reports by Reuters, as soon as Microsoft recognized its mistake of updating the wrong code, it tried to roll it back, but that didn't solve the problem. As a result, they had to turn off select servers to re-establish things the way they were prior to the crash.

Other Microsoft services like Hotmail and Outlook.com were also affected by the downtime.

At Yahoo's end, only the search function was disrupted.

Mobile assistants Siri and Cortana, which use Bing, were also affected during the time of the Bing outage

Both Bing and Yahoo search engines have been restored.

Users Express Dissatisfaction on Social Media

As is the custom these days, loads of Bing and Yahoo users resorted to Twitter (TWTR) to post their dissatisfaction, apparently disregarding the search engine giant, Google (GOOGL).

Yahoo currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
