Honda Motor Co., Ltd. (HMC) announced that it will recall Crosstour vehicles of model year 2015 in the U.S. due to a problem in the side curtain airbags. According to the company, the tubing connected to the side curtain airbag inflators in the recalled vehicles, may have a manufacturing defect. As a result of this, one or both of the side curtain airbags may not deploy properly in case of a crash. This increases the risk of injury.
However, no accident or injury has been reported due to this issue as yet. The problem was detected during quality analysis at the inflator tube supplier.
Honda will recall around 1,252 Crosstour vehicles to check and replace the airbags, free of cost. Vehicle owners will be notified about the recall via email, Jan 2015 onward.
However, Honda clarified that this problem is not related to the defective Takata frontal airbags, which have resulted in millions of vehicle recalls this year. The driver-side and passenger-side air bags manufactured by Takata have an inflator that was produced with a faulty part. Thus, when an air bag is deployed, the inflator can explode and shoot out metal fragments into the vehicle. As a result, automakers have been forced to recall a series of vehicles.
Apart from Honda, other automakers, including Toyota Motor Corporation (TM), Ford Motor Co. (F), General Motors Company (GM) and Chrysler Group too are facing challenges owing to Takata-made airbags. Nearly 20 million vehicles have been recalled globally due to defective Takata airbag inflators. Of these, almost 13.4 million vehicles were recalled by Honda, which is Takata’s largest customer.
Honda currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
