Ford Announces 2 New Recalls, Widens Takata Airbag Recall

Zacks

Ford Motor Co. (F) announced two new safety recalls and expanded an earlier recall this week. The first new recall covers 19,825 Transit Connect cargo vans in the U.S. and federalized territories. The adhesion of an exterior plastic panel to the sliding doors may not be adequate and may lead to loosening or severance of the panel, along with noise or water leakage.

Ford’s dealers will install the sliding door plastic panels with appropriate materials in accordance with the correct method in order to fix the problem. The recalled vehicles include the 2014 Transit Connect cargo van one-panel and two-panel vehicles manufactured at the Valencia Assembly Plant between Aug 9, 2013 and Sep 20, 2014.

The second recall covers 728 Ford Mustangs of model year 2015, featuring 2.3 liter engines which were manufactured at Ford’s Flat Rock Assembly Plant between Sep 25 and Oct 9, 2014. According to the company, improper installation of the fuel pressure sensor in these vehicles may lead to pressurized fuel leak, which increases the risk of fire.

While Ford has not been notified of any fire, crash or injury due to the issue, it has decided to replace the fuel supply tube assembly, which carries the fuel pressure sensor of these vehicles, free of cost. 712 of the recalled vehicles are in the U.S. and federalized territories, and 16 are in Canada.

Additionally, Ford has expanded its recall of vehicles with faulty Takata-made passenger-side airbag inflators to 38,500 vehicles in the U.S. and federalized territories at the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”). The recalled vehicles include 2004–2005 Ford Ranger vehicles built at the Edison Assembly Plant from Aug 12, 2003 to Mar 1, 2004; some 2004–2005 Ford Ranger vehicles manufactured at the Twin Cities Assembly Plant between May 21, 2003 and May 4, 2005; and some 2005–2006 Ford GT vehicles produced at the Wixom Assembly Plant, from Feb 11, 2005 to Jan 30, 2006. As a result of this recall, the total vehicles recalled by Ford for the Takata airbag issue has increased to 98,000.

Currently, Ford carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Investors interested in the auto industry could consider better-ranked stocks like Gentex Corp. (GNTX), Douglas Dynamics, Inc. (PLOW) and STRATTEC Security Corporation (STRT), all sporting a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
