Twitter (TWTR) Launches Tweet Index to Search Older Posts

Zacks

Twitter Inc. (TWTR) announced earlier this week that it would offer an enhanced feature — Tweet Index — that can search through every tweet posted dating as far back as 2006. The company aims to increase user satisfaction with the new feature, which in turn will help it to retain existing users as well as attract new ones.

Further, users can now edit previous tweets and even download and archive all posts. Those who access Twitter via Google’s (GOOGL) Android and Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iOS devices can also use this feature.

However, we believe that there is a flip side to this upgrade. While archiving old posts resolves searchability issues, it offers users access to controversial tweets that the tweeter would rather forget. Though users can delete any tweet, the option to remove older tweets in bulk is not yet available.

It is yet to be seen how well Twitter users receive this new upgrade, to what extent it improves the user experience and how financially viable it is for the company.

In addition to Tweet Index, the microblogging site declared its intention of launching ways for people to record, edit and share video in real time using the Twitter app by early 2015.The new and improved app will be efficient enough to rival YouTube.

Twitter also plans to unveil mobile apps apart from that of Twitter and Vine. It also plans to tailor its content to suit the needs of the local market, thereby gaining users and an edge over Facebook (FB).

Twitter currently has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
