Amazon Launches New MySQL Compatible Database Aurora

Zacks

At its re:Invent developer conference in Las Vegas, Amazon.com (AMZN) unveiled Aurora, a new relational database service. The company took three years to build Aurora.

What Is Aurora?

Historically, while zeroing down on database solutions, consumers had to choose between performance and price.

Commercial databases give excellent performance and superior availability features, but are costly, difficult to manage, have high lock-in, and come with licensing terms.

While popular open-source databases are not as expensive and compex, customers find that they can at times be less reliable and need a lot of work to be executed at commercial levels.

Aurora is a MySQL compatible database service that allows the user to migrate data into the service effortlessly.

However, compared to regular MySQL, the service is faster, has higher scalability and offers greater security. According to Amazon, the service can handle about 6 million inserts a minute and serve up to 30 million queries per minute.

The Aurora service starts at $0.29 per hour, with no upfront cost. That’s 1/10th of the cost of the leading commercial database solutions presently available.

Aurora will be joining MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL and Oracle on the company’s Relational Database Service (RDS) lineup.

The service is available for preview.

More on the Table

Amazon also launched the new AWS CodeDeploy called Apollo. This will enable rolling upgrades and simplify deployments to multiple instances. This service will work with customers’ existing toolsets.

In the next year, Amazon plans to launch the AWS CodePipeline, a continuous test, build and integrate toolset. It is also coming out with AWS CodeCommit, a managed repository that allows one to put the code where it can execute swiftly with least latency.

Amazon currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
