Google’s Newest Nexus Products Take on Apple

Zacks

Google (GOOGL) unveiled the Nexus 9 tablet with an 8.9-inch display developed by Taiwanese hardware manufacturer HTC and the Nexus 6 smartphone with a 6-inch display manufactured by Motorola Mobility. It is also slated to release a new streaming video and music device, Nexus Player, to compete with Apple TV.

These devices will be equipped with the latest version of Google’s Android operating system named Lollipop.

Google Targets Apple

With its latest offering, Google is targeting Apple’s (AAPL) customer base in the increasingly vital mobile device space. Google's Android software and Apple's iOS software power most of the world's smartphones and tablets.

Since Google gives away its Android software, other Android devices typically sell for less than Apple’s iPhone and iPad. This has allowed more people globally to buy smartphones and tablets.

However, mobile app developers have put in more resources toward tailoring their products for the Apple family as owners of these devices usually have more disposable income to spend.

Google is therefore targeting Apple's affluent market with the Nexus line.

Nexus 6

The Nexus 6 comes with a nearly 6-inch Quad HD display, eclipsing the 5.5-inch display on Apple's iPhone 6 Plus.

Equipped with a 13-megapixel camera, it is capable of optical image stabilization. It also has a front camera.

The phone boasts dual front-facing speakers.

The smartphone comes with a turbo charger, which allows users to enjoy 6 hours of use with just 15 minutes of charge, according to Google.

The device comes in 32 GB and 64 GB memory options.

The devices are priced at $649 without a wireless contract commitment, around $300 more than the Nexus 5 with a roughly 5-inch screen.

Nexus 9 Tablet

The Nexus 9 tablet features a nearly 9-inch screen — two inches larger than the previous version. According to Google — the brushed-metal tablet is compact but big enough to work on. It has an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 1.6 megapixel front camera.

Google Nexus 9 tablet is available in 16 GB & 32 GB storage space. However, there is no expandable storage. It is priced at $399, 74% higher than its predecessor.

The Nexus 9 and the Nexus player can be pre-ordered from Oct 17 onward and will hit stores on Nov 3.

Lollipop, the Latest Android OS

Android Lollipop comes with a number of new features — a universal user interface and improved experience across devices, better multitasking, and enhanced enterprise features. It offers device encryption, just like Apple's iOS 8.

Lollipop, at the outset, will be available on Google's newest Nexus devices, including the older Nexus 5, and will be rolled out to other manufacturers subsequently.
