Microsoft (MSFT) has recently announced the availability of its new high-end smartphone, Lumia 830, in the UK. The smartphone will be available at the major operators and retailers including EE, Dixons, Carphone Warehouse, Tesco and Amazon (AMZN).
Rolled out at the IFA technology show in Berlin last month, Microsoft’s Lumia 830 features Cortana, a voice assistant that helps with directions, calendar appointments and messages, just like Apple’s (AAPL) Siri. It also comes with Lumia Denim and Windows Phone 8.1 Update.
The phone, which supports 4G LTE cellular networks, features a Quad-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor along with 1GB of RAM, 5-inch display with 1280x720px resolution and Gorilla Glass 3. The 830 version, with a two megapixels front camera, also includes the Lumia Selfie app that uses face-detection technology to assist users on how to position the rear camera for a better selfie. The device will also offer various photo-editing options.
The handset, however, will not be on par with Microsoft's pricier flagship, Lumia 930, popularly known as the Lumia Icon in the U.S. The 930 smartphone takes 20 megapixel shots, while the 830 phones are only capable of taking 10 megapixel ones.
These smartphones put Microsoft in a direct price war with Samsung and Apple. Samsung Galaxy S5 costs $600, while iPhone 5s costs around $650. The 830 Lumia version comes with a price tag of £24.99 on contract in the UK.
With the launch of these new models, Microsoft is trying to increase its share in the global smartphone market, where the Windows Phones still occupy a smaller space in comparison to Apple’s iOS and Android.
