The Dow Chemical Company (DOW) has been chosen as the Official Carbon Partner of the next Olympic Games to be held in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 with the aim of reducing the green house gas emissions during the event. Dow being a World Olympic Partner has now become the first partner of Rio 2016’s “Abraca Sustainability” program that will ensure that the Games have low environmental impact.

Dow targets reducing 500,000 tons of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) equivalents (CO2eq) during the Games through verified third-party emissions reductions. Moreover, Dow and Rio 2016 will be working together to mitigate an additional 1.5 million tons of CO2eq from other Games-related emissions by 2026.

Dow offers low-carbon and energy efficient technologies to meet the demands of its customers and partners. The company has already been successful in the “Sustainable Future” program implemented at the Sochi 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and now strives to meet the technology needs of Brazil for reducing carbon emissions from Rio 2016’s Olympic Games.

According to Dr. Nicoletta Piccolrovazzi, the global technology and sustainability director at Dow Olympic Operations, Dow will be addressing areas like food packaging, agriculture, industrial processes and the building and construction sector to reduce the impact on the climatic during the Games. The benefits of the Games are expected to spread nationwide.

For Rio 2016, sustainability being a necessity has made the organization to partner with Dow — a global leader in low-carbon technology solutions. As the leading principle in the Abraca Sustainability program is to maximize sustainability during the Games, Dow became a natural choice for them as the partnership fits into their goals and expectations in minimizing carbon emissions.
