CSX’s Mobile App to Boost Railroad Incident Response

Zacks

Leading freight railroad carrier CSX Corp. (CSX) has recently launched a first-of-its-kind on-demand mobile application to enable access to train and cargo information in real time via mobile devices, in a bid to facilitate railroad incident response.

The new app will provide firefighters, police and other emergency responders with easy access to critical information over mobile thus facilitating quick response to emergencies.

CSX has launched the new app in collaboration with Operation Respond Institute that offers real-time rail information.

This product launch is the latest in a line of collaborations that CSX Corp. enjoys with federal bodies. The company partners with the government in multi-year rail infrastructure projects such as the National Gateway – that is expected to improve intermodal capacity and generate easy and efficient connectivity for double-stack intermodal trains between Mid-Atlantic ports and the Midwest.

The company has also allied with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the expansion of freight and commuter rail operation. This venture will increase the intermodal terminal base and expedite the intermodal clearance from Worcester to the New York state line. In addition, it will offer a competitive edge against peers like Union Pacific Corp. (UNP), Norfolk Southern Corp. (NSC) and Kansas City Southern (KSU).

Further, CSX Corp. entered into a deal with Florida state regulators to deploy a computerized rail operation called SunRail. Per the contract, CSX will sell a 61-mile rail corridor to the State of Florida and in exchange receive exclusive rights to operate on the SunRail track.

In Aug 2013, the company had acquired Eastern Associated Terminal in Tampa, FL, which is a phosphate export facility. The new terminal was in addition to the company’s existing Rockport terminal. The acquisition has enabled the company to better serve its customers in the area and tap new opportunities in chemical shipments.

CSX currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
