Amazon to Stream 4K Ultra HD Content Starting October

Zacks

Reportedly, all of Amazon.com Inc.’s (AMZN) 2014 original series, both comedies and dramas, that were filmed using 4K Ultra HD (UHD), will be available for streaming on Samsung 4K TVs starting this October.

Earlier this year, Amazon teamed up with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and major Hollywood studios and TV programmers to offer a library of 4K UHD choices to its viewers. However, for now, Amazon’s 4K content will exclusively be available on Samsung TVs.

4K UHD is the latest and most advanced technology in HD video. It offers contents with horizontal resolution to the order of 4,000 pixels. The use of horizontal resolution technology is a qualitative shift from the vertical resolution offered by older HDTV technology. This technology offers four times as many pixels on screen as HD TVs and will significantly enhance the video with unprecedented picture clarity and sound quality.

Amazon remains committed to provide extensive 4K UHD content for 4K TV owners and also offer the best viewing experiences at home.

Amazon continues to see attractive growth rates, which is commendable given its size and market position. This has only been possible because of its extensive investments in growth areas such as streaming content, tablets and cloud computing. We believe Amazon's continued investment in new technologies, such as 4K, will help it to be a leader in these segments.

Amazon is one of the major players in an extremely fast-growing market. In the second quarter of 2014, Amazon’s revenues of $19.34 billion were within its guided range and in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Both product and service sales grew in double digits from the year-ago quarter and contributed 79% and 21%, respectively, to total revenue.

The online retailer’s leadership in the 4K UHD market will likely translate into higher revenues due to the increasing consumer adoption for the new HD format. However, uncertainty regarding its investment plans and the probability of continuing losses in the near term compels us to be cautious.

Currently, Amazon has a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Stocks that have been performing well and are worth considering include Chinese e-Commerce company Ecommerce China Dangdang (DANG), Mercadolibre, Inc. (MELI) and World Energy Solutions, Inc. (XWES). All these stocks sport a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
