Worldwide provider of navigation, communications and information devices, Garmin’s (GRMN) unit, Garmin International, recently announced the launch of its first Android-based fleet navigators, namely fleet 660 and fleet 670.
These new fleet navigators offer customized applications and latest navigation technologies, helping fleet providers to fulfill customer requirements. Both the fleets are optimized for in-cab featuring a dust-proof design, high-sensitivity GPS, extra loud speaker and sunlight readable touchscreen. Garmin’s fleet navigators can be paired wirelessly to a black box data transponder or other sensors and peripherals, such as a wireless printer or card reader through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Additionally, the 6-inch touch display and Garmin's intuitive navigation interface make driving-related information easy to read, thereby limiting driver interaction. The magnetic device can be easily transferred from vehicle to vehicle. Both the fleets detect driver behavior allowing the fleet manager to assess driver's safety and driving habits. The fleet also offers a gyroscope, supporting Near Field Communication for drivers, vehicle identification and data synchronization.
The information includes details about traffic situations and interchanges. It features turn arrows, distance between turns current speed of the vehicle and speed limit. It also guides drivers with voice prompts and free lifetime traffic and maps.
The wide use of the Android platform will help fleet providers develop customized solutions without depending on third-party technology companies. These include easy integration of existing applications from their partners for signature captures, work orders, inspection reports and many others.
Fleet 660, designed for local fleets, is priced at $399.99 and fleet 670, designed for commercial truck fleets, is priced at $449.99. Both fleets are expected to hit the markets in the fourth quarter of 2014.
Garmin is well positioned in the personal navigation devices market, although competitive pressures have affected its business. Garmin has launched several products throughout the year, including golf gadgets, wearable devices and a portable fleet management GPS system. New products and the company’s original equipment manufacturer approach will continue to expand its margins
