Leading semiconductor solutions provider Broadcom Corp.'s (BRCM) Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) Wi-Fi technology has been selected by American Science and Engineering, Inc. (ASEI, or "AS&E") as the connectivity component for its revolutionary Z Backscatter imaging system.
Broadcom WICED Technology will provide support for AS&E MINI Z On-the-Go Threat Detection System.
MINI Z System
AS&E’s MINI Z system is a compact, single-sided imager that can be used to scan objects in areas difficult to reach, such as unattended packages, walls, small boats, aircraft and car interiors. Thus, the system can effectively detect organic threats, contraband and explosives, ensuring public safety as well as customs and border law enforcement.
The MINI Z uses AS&E’s signature Z Backscatter technology to generate a real-time image of the scan target on a tablet screen, which highlights organic materials that transmission X-ray systems may miss, such as explosives, drugs and plastic guns. The MINI Z is the first portable screen implementation to integrate the WICED platform.
Broadcom's WICED technology supplies a comprehensive development platform to this pioneer product that has huge implications in the detection industry.
WICED Technology
Broadcom’s WICED platform speeds up the time-to-market for an extensive range of Internet of Things (IoT) innovations, by offering simplified implementation of wireless connectivity to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Evolution of the IoT heralds considerable growth opportunities in a wide range of end-market segments. By 2020, several analysts anticipate revenues of around $8.9 trillion from the budding market. According to IDC, popularity of wireless connectivity and omnipresent Internet access is the primary driver of IoT’s momentum.
With development of the IoT ecosystem, emerging market segments including connected appliances, smart energy systems and cloud-based health and home management services, are witnessing quick adoption of Broadcom’s turnkey WICED technology.
Broadcom’s competitors in the wireless connectivity segment include QUALCOMM Inc. (QCOM) and TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. (TQNT).
Broadcom currently has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
