Record 2013 Sales for GM’s Chevrolet

General Motors Company’s (GM) Chevrolet brand had record high sales of 4,984,126 vehicles globally in 2013. The strong sales were driven by the launch of 25 new products as well as an enhanced retail experience.

Sales in the U.S., Chevrolet’s largest market, increased 5.2% year over year to 1,947,125 units. China, the world’s largest automobile market, witnessed a 4% rise in Chevrolet sales to 652,077 vehicles.

Brazil was the third-largest market for Chevrolet in 2013, with sales volume of 649,792 units, up 1.1% over 2012. Mexico witnessed a 7.6% rise in sales to 193,072 vehicles. However, the fifth-largest Chevrolet market, Russia, suffered a 14.8% decline in its sales to 174,649 vehicles.

The largest-selling nameplate of Chevrolet was the Cruze small car. The car has had global sales of over 2.5 million units since its launch in 2008.

Sales of Chevrolet’s small cars in the U.S. increased 10% in 2013, while sales of Silverado light and heavy-duty pickup trucks surged 15% year over year. Sonic, Cruze and Equinox witnessed record high sales.

Chevrolet retained the crown of being the best-selling performance car brand in the U.S. for the fourth straight year. Moreover, the Volt was the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the nation.

The strong performance of Chevrolet is expected to continue in 2014, buoyed by the launch of the new Corvette Z06 and the C7.R race car.

Even the parent company, General Motors, recorded annual sales of 2.8 million units in the U.S., up 7% over 2012. Retail sales for the year also grew 11%.

Ford Motor Co.’s (F) total U.S. sales in 2013 amounted to 2,493,918 units, buoyed by the annual sales record set by Ford Fiesta, Fusion and Escape. In 2013, Toyota Motor Corp. (TM) registered sales of 2,236,042 units, up 7.4% over 2012. Honda Motor Co., Ltd.’s (HMC) annual sales surged 7.2% over 2012 to 1,525,312 units.
