Reportedly, San Diego, Calif.-based quick-service hamburger restaurateur, Jack in the Box Inc. (JACK), is seeking to increase its focus on low-calorie offerings with the addition of a new item — Egg White & Turkey Breakfast Sandwich — to its food line-up. This sandwich contains about 250 calories with only 6 grams of fat, making it a healthy option for food lovers.

The sandwich, made with classic bun stuffed with egg whites and grilled turkey, will be served at all Jack in the Box locations beginning from 2014.

The company has also stated that customers will now have the option of adding egg whites to any of the breakfast sandwiches for free. Apart from this new offering, the customers will also have the option to choose other healthy food items like Blueberry Oatmeal and Apple Bites from the company’s breakfast line-up.

Lately, U.S. eateries are serving a healthier menu to cater to the consumers’ preference for fresh, organic, nutritious and low-calorie foods. Rising health concerns and increasing awareness about obesity and related diseases have led to the shift in consumer preference toward healthy and “good for you” products. Therefore, the introduction of this low-calorie food item is expected to gain huge popularity among consumers in this holiday season.

The world’s No. 2 hamburger chain, Burger King Worldwide (BKW), is also trying to expand its platter of low-calorie foods. In this regard, in late September, the restaurateur introduced a new crinkle-cut French fry, Satisfries, which contain 20% less calories than the regular ones.

Product innovation acts as one of the profit driving strategies of Jack in the Box. Consumer product companies necessarily need to upgrade brands and create differentiated value propositions for customers in order to cater to consumers’ changing demand. For instance, in early December, Jack in the Box launched two limited-time products — Fajita Ranch Melt and Jalapeño BBQ Burger — to tap the increasing demand in this holiday season.
