DIRECTV Enriches Mobile Apps

In order to boost its mobile TV features, the largest U.S. satellite TV operator, DIRECTV (DTV) has recently teamed-up with two popular digital technology firms namely, LiveClips and i.TV, which are capable of delivering interactive TV experience to the viewers.

Higher proliferation of smartphones and tablets coupled with increased usage of high-speed data services has propelled most users to not only watch their favorite TV shows on different gadgets but also helped them to share it on popular social networking sites like Facebook, Inc. (FB) and Twitter, Inc. (TWTR).

Hence, going by the latest trend, DIRECTV has partnered with both LiveClips and i.TV to make its popular NFL SUNDAY TICKET application feature more interesting. The LiveClips technology software will allow users to access video clips of every game, live, post-game or archived sports feedback.

i.TV, which serves more than 15 million active users every month, will act as a second screen platform to DIRECTV, thereby enabling DIRECTV to expand its NFL SUNDAY TICKET fan base.

DIRECTV reported robust third-quarter of 2013 financial results with both the top and bottom line outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate. In the U.S., when most cable operators like Comcast Corp. (CMCSA) and Time Warner Cable are continuously losing video subscribers to large telecom and video streaming service providers, DIRECTV on the other hand is constantly adding new customers in every quarter.

In the third-quarter of 2013, net subscriber added were 139,000 compared with 67,000 in the year-ago quarter. Continuous launch of such innovative apps and products has helped DIRECTV maintain its solid performance in each quarter.

Currently, DIRECTV carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
