Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK) continues to provide several components to Orbital Sciences Corp. (ORB) for its numerous space missions. The company recently announced that Orbital Sciences has installed its Planar Unfolding Modular Array (“PUMA”) solar arrays on the SES-8 satellite. Orbital Sciences’ satellite was launched last night.

With this delivery, Alliant has completed its 90th successful on-orbit deployment of its solar array wing. The company’s Space Components division was responsible for this delivery.

The PUMA solar array has low non-recurring engineering cost, low operation risk and can be deployed easily on a satellite. It is suitable for both small and large satellites. The solar array is used to power Orbital Sciences’ Star-2 geostationary Earth orbit (“GEO”) family satellites. It is also utilized on the Global Positioning System.

Orbital Sciences manufactures small and medium class space and rocket systems. The company offers engineering, production and technical services for the space programs of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (“NASA”), U.S. Department of Defense, and several commercial and academic organizations.

The solar array has 100% flight success track-record with installation of approximately 50 solar array wings on-orbit. We believe higher demand for this solar array is mainly due to its strong success rate. The proven track record of the components enabled Alliant to become a trusted partner for these specialized projects.

Earlier, Alliant had supplied its PUMA solar array to several organizations including Israel Aerospace Industries and The Boeing Company (BA). In Jan 2013, Alliant entered into an agreement with Israel Aerospace Industries. As per the deal, the company will provide PUMA solar array to power Israel Aerospace’s Affordable Modular Optimized satellite.

It is evident from past record that Alliant has a strong relationship with Orbital Sciences. In Aug 2013, the company received a contract from Orbital Sciences to deliver a couple of products and offer services for Orbital’s Air Launch Vehicle.

Alliant intends to keep its commitments in terms of maintaining product and service standards along with delivery timing. This helps the company to win orders from different government establishments as well as private organizations at regular intervals, thus ensuring a stable revenue flow.

Arlington, Va.-based Alliant Techsystems Inc. provides aerospace and defense products to the U.S. government agencies. The company currently has a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy). Another stock from the industry that is presently performing well is Hexcel Corp. (HXL) with a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
