CY Unveils Advanced Video Frame Buffer

Zacks

Cypress Semiconductor Corp (CY) recently announced production availability of a high-density video frame buffer. It is designed to meet the growing demand for high bandwidth video buffering.

Buffer refers to the memory used temporarily to store input or output data while the data is being moved. The new device is based on Cypress’s industry-leading SRAM (static random access memory) technology. It reduces implementation and debugging efforts while keeping costs to the minimum at the same time.

High-definition video usage is getting increasingly popular in medical and military applications as well as in the consumer electronics industry. Cypress’s new CYFB0072 video frame buffer offers a more stable, cost-effective substitute for the standard DRAM-based FIFO memories. It can function in any system that needs buffering at high speeds. It does not require an external crystal. The new video frame buffer solution will aid system designers in marketing their products faster and improve performance.

Cypress is a semiconductor company, offering high-performance, mixed signal, programmable solutions, touchscreens and trackpad solutions for notebook, PCs and peripherals. Cypress is a world leader in USB controllers, which enhance connectivity and performance in a wide range of consumer and industrial products. Cypress is also the world leader in SRAM and non-volatile RAM memories. Cypress serves numerous major markets, including consumer, mobile handsets, computation, data communications, automotive, industrial, and military.

Cypress reported third quarter revenues of $188.7 million, down 2.5% sequentially and 7.0% year over year. The decline was due to weakness in the mobile handset market. Weak macro environment and poor visibility related to order patterns are concerns for Cypress.

Currently, Cypress has a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell). Stocks that look attractive currently include Jarden Corp (JAH), Microchip Technology Inc (MCHP) and Intersil Corp (ISIL), all with a Zacks Rank # 2 (Buy)
