PPG Aerospace – Transparencies, the aerospace products and services business unit of PPG, designed unique, light-weight glass windshields and side cockpit windows for the new Dassault Falcon 5X business jet. The innovative design is expected to enhance cockpit’s aerodynamics and improve Falcon jet’s looks.

PPG has signed a contract with Dassault Aviation to supply production cockpit windows and spare windshields for the Falcon jet. The windshields and side cockpit windows to be fitted in the aircraft will be specially designed with three plies of HERCULITE II to make the glass chemically strong and light weight so that it can withstand the impact of a 4-pound bird at 350 knots. The aircraft’s windshields and windows will be coated with SURFACE SEAL to enhance water shedding for visibility and will not have any windshield wipers.

Qualification testing for the Safety of Flight has been done. Windshields and windows will be produced at PPG’s Huntsville, Ala., plant.

Separately, PPG’s aerospace coatings group collaborated with Eclipse Aerospace to provide the Eclipse 550 customers with the advanced weight savings exterior coating system. This will improve aircraft fuel efficiency and the durability for extended service life along with lowering operating costs.

Eclipse’s decision to select PPG was based on the latter’s excellence in technical support, economics of coatings system and Eclipse Aerospace’s choice to move from chromate-based paint to a chromate-free product that reduces environmental exposure and associated costs .

PPG’s DESOTHANE HD/CA 9000 series basecoat/clearcoat and DESOPRIME 7502E chromate-free primer will be used on every Eclipse 550 jet aircrafts. DESOTHANE HD/CA 9000 series is build of heavily pigmented basecoat that offers color in a single coat, instead of the two or three coats, thus saving material, weight and application time.

The first Eclipse 550 twin-engine jet was showcased at the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) convention and exhibition in Las Vegas Convention Center that was held from Oct 22 to 24.

Meanwhile, it was reported that PPG’s aerospace transparencies business has started supplying production windshields and side cockpit windows to Eclipse Aerospace for the Eclipse 550 jet. The design engineers from both the companies worked jointly to develop glass-faced acrylic designs for the Eclipse 550 aircraft.

PPG will supply the new lightweight cockpit windshields from its Sylmar, Calif., facility. It was also displayed at NBAA convention and exhibition held in Las Vegas on the first production Eclipse 550 jet.
