Toyota Motor Corp.’s (TM) 2014 Corolla could just manage a “Marginal” rating from Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in a front crash test. This is the second-lowest rating among the four possible ratings in the small overlap front crash test by the institute.
According to the institute, the vehicle’s structural performance was not good and the space for the driver was highly compromised. They believe that this may lead to injuries to the lower part of the left leg in case of a crash.
However, Toyota’s Corolla was avowed good rating from the institute for other four tests including moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear tests. The automaker is now focusing on developing solutions to attain better crash performance.
In addition, Toyota Camry sedan, Prius V hybrid and RAV4 crossover received “Poor” rating by IIHS under the new test criteria in 2013. Other than Toyota, Nissan Motor Co.’s (NSANY) Sentra, Kia Soul and 2014 Kia Forte received “Poor” rating by IIHS.
In Aug 2013, IIHS had conferred the Top Safety Pick+ rating on Ford Motor Co.’s (F) 2013 Ford Focus. Focus is one of the six vehicles in the small car segment to have received IIHS's highest rating.
The Top Safety Pick+ rating is a new rating category for occupant protection that is given after assessing vehicles under five categories: moderate overlap frontal crash, side impact, rollover, seats/head restraints and small overlap frontal crash. Focus received good rating in the first four tests and was assigned acceptable rating in the fifth test.
Honda Motor Co.’s (HMC) redesigned Civic surpassed Ford’s Focus by receiving a good rating in the small overlap frontal crash test by IIHS. According to the institute, Civic is the only vehicle to get the top rating in the new test on front-end crash.
