Serres Sagami makes second major acquisition in less than a year

Canada NewsWire

STE-SOPHIE, QC, Aug. 22, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ – Following on its
acquisition last November of the 2.1-hectare Savoura production site set up in Ste-Marthe, in the county of Vaudreuil-Soulanges, Serres Sagami, which markets its products under the Sagami and Biologico trademarks, recently took possession of a new production site located
in Mirabel. This 2.3-hectare site, also a former Savoura location, means that the company can extend its total conventional and
organic greenhouse tomato production to almost 9 hectares in Quebec. The growing demand by Quebec consumers for a 100% Quebec product in most food markets has filled the Serres Sagami order book considerably over the past operating year.

This major investment, announced by St phane Roy, President of Serres Sagami, was required to meet needs of Quebec and Canadian market realities. St phane Roy asserts that Quebec is capable of meeting consumers’ requirements regarding quality,
reliability, accessibility and exemplary environmental values
throughout North America. He sees no justification for the presence of Mexican tomatoes on Quebec grocery retailers’ shelves at this time of year, and the Quebec government‘s recent food sovereignty policy is fully explicit and bears out this
evidence very well.

About Serres Sagami

For almost 20 years, Serres Sagami has been marketing a number of tomato varieties, under the Sagami brand name, for the Quebec and Canadian markets. In the spring of 2011,
the company added four varieties of organic tomatoes, marketed under
the Biologico brand name, to its list of products. The Ste-Sophie greenhouses were, at the same time, equipped with a biomass heating
system, which enabled a drop in GHGs of more than 7,500 tons annually.
Use of hot water from the ELKEM METAL plant located nearby has made the Saguenay site a model of energy efficiency. Finally, two new additions – the Ste-Marthe acreage and, more recently, the Mirabel site – provide Serres Sagami with almost 9 hectares of land within Quebec.
