ABB to Power Sardinia

ABB Ltd, (ABB) recently received a $20-million order from Terna, a leading Italian transmission system operator, to deliver a synchronous compensation solution that will be installed at the Codrongianos power station in northern Sardinia. The order will jointly be executed by ABB and Ansaldo Energia. The scope of the agreement includes design, supply, commissioning and maintenance services.

A synchronous compensator adjusts power conditions in the transmission grid easily by generating or absorbing reactive power. Thereby, it regulates voltage and improves the power factor. A synchronous compensator improves the reliability, efficiency and safety of the electrical system.

In order to have a smooth and efficient power function, ABB will primarily be supplying transformers, a combination of low and medium voltage switchgear, disconnectors, start-up and excitation systems, cables and other auxiliary equipment.

The Codrongianos power station will include two systems, each having 250 megavolt ampere (MVA) synchronous compensator, excitation system, startup and cooling systems, a 330 MVA step-up transformer for connection to the 380 kilovolt (kV) grid, medium-voltage switchgear and the auxiliary, protection, management, control and monitoring systems.

Terna was the first independent Transmission System operator in Europe, and currently has the sixth largest network in the world with more than 63,500 kilometers of power lines.

In Mar 2013, ABBhadreceived an order approximately worth $10 million from Landsnet, the Icelandic transmission system operator. The scope of the contract involves supplying a high-voltage submarine and underground power-cable system, primarily to transport electricity from the mainland to the volcanic island of Heimaey.

ABB is a leading provider of integrated power and automation solutions for conventional and renewable power generation plants and water applications. The company has an extensive offering that includes turnkey electrical, automation, instrumentation and control systems, supported by a comprehensive service portfolio to optimize performance, reliability and efficiency while minimizing environmental impact.

ABB currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other stocks worth considering at the moment are Willdan Group Inc. (WLDN), Orion marine Group Inc. (ORN) and Honeywell International Inc. (HON). All three have a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
