Itron’s Two New Indian Projects

Zacks

Itron, Inc. (ITRI) has been selected by Larsen & Toubro to provide an advanced metering solution to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the water board. The solution will help in measuring water consumption accurately within the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India.

DJB, which has been meeting the needs of potable water for a large population in Delhi, is facing challenges regarding the accurate measure of water consumption. Constant growth of population in DJB’s service territory is the main hindrance to water conservation.

DJB in its metering automation project will utilize Itron's advanced metering solution to collect, measure and analyze water usage. The solution includes 120,000 advanced automated meters, 40,000 standard meters, mobile collection equipment and software. The solution will allow DJB to efficiently access information and process bills for water usage.

DJB's metering automation project is expected to complete in Mar 2014. It will be the largest mobile advanced metering system in India after completion. Larsen & Toubro, the largest Indian construction company, has also selected Itron to deliver 300,000 residential water meters in 2011 for DJB. All meters supplied under both contracts will be manufactured in Itron's water meter factory in Dehradun, India.

Currently the water industry is facing unique challenges. With increasing population it is difficult to reduce water losses and optimize distribution. On the other hand, Itron supports more sustainable water usage and better management of water reserves through its innovative solutions.

Itron, which belongs to the electrical equipment industry along with Ametek Inc. (AME), Agilent Technologies Inc. (A) and Teradyne Inc. (TER), has also been awarded another pilot project in India by SPML to improve water distribution and improve customer service in several regions of Delhi. As per the contract Itron will deliver 90,000 advanced meters replacing all current meters.

Liberty Lake, WA-based Itron produces electricity, gas, water and heat meters, data collection and utility software solutions along with various other associated metering products for residential, commercial and industrial, and transmission and distribution customers.

Itron currently retains a short-term Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
