Calgon Carbon’s Hyde GUARDIAN Gets AMS Nod (CCC) (CECE) (FTEK) (IDSA)

The Hyde GUARDIAN Ballast Water Treatment System (BWTS), made by Calgon Carbon Corporation’s (CCC) fully-owned subsidiary Hyde Marine, became the first BWTS to get Alternate Management System (AMS) approval from the United States Coast Guard (USCG).

The AMS approval is the initial step toward achieving the full USCG type approval. This approval also acts as an interim measure that allows a BWTS to be used on a vessel for five years after the vessel matches USCG Ballast Water Discharge Standards.

The time period of five years is sufficient time for the BWTS manufacturers to obtain U.S. type approval and the ship operator’s compliance with U.S. ballast water regulations.

Provisions are made such that vessels operating in U.S waters with ballast capacities between 1500 m³ per hour and 5000 m³ per hour need to meet the USCG Ballast Water Discharge Standards by the time of their first major dry docking scheduled after Jan 1, 2014.

A BWTS must have been approved by a foreign administration in accordance with the International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments prior to receiving the AMS approval from the Coast Guard.

Hyde Marine has been in the maritime business for more than 100 years, pioneering development of ballast water treatment technologies and emerging as a leader in the U.S. manufacturer and educator.

Hyde GUARDIAN BWTS was initially launched in 1998, and then it emerged as an industry leader presenting mechanical separation with stacked-disc filtration followed by UV disinfection. More than 240 Hyde GUARDIAN units have been sold to date for installation in various ship types and sizes around the world.

Calgon Carbon currently retains a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
