AK Steel Holding Corporation’s (AKS) Zanesville (Ohio) Works has received “100% Award for Safety” from the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation, Division of Safety and Hygiene.
The award was conferred on AK Steel for excellent safety performance and for operating without any lost-time injuries or illnesses in 2012. AK Steel demonstrated a safety performance that was five times better than the steel industry average for the full-year 2012.
AK Steel’s Zanesville Works also received a "Special Award for Safety" for operating 4,248,816 man-hours without a lost-time injury between Apr 21, 2003 and Dec 31, 2012. The award is also part of a collaborative safety awareness program established by the Muskingum County Safety Council and Chamber of Commerce.
AK Steel is a world leader in the production of flat-rolled carbon, stainless and electrical steel products, primarily for automotive, infrastructure and manufacturing, construction and electrical power generation and distribution markets.
Few days ago, AK Steel provided its outlook for the first quarter of 2013. The company has projected lower net loss of 9 cents to 13 cents in the quarter compared with a loss of 30 cents in the fourth quarter of 2012 due to lower raw material costs.
AK Steel expects average selling price to rise about 5% to $1,060 per ton in the first quarter from $1,011 in the fourth quarter of 2012. Shipments are expected to be in the range of 1,275,000 to 1,300,000 tons in the quarter compared with 1,406,100 tons in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Currently, AK Steel maintains a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Other companies in the steel industry worth considering are Gibraltar Industries Inc. (ROCK), Shiloh Industries Inc. (SHLO) and ) and Companhia Siderurgica Nacional (SID). Both Gibraltar and Shiloh hold a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), while Companhia Siderurgica carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy).
