Comcast Corp. (CMCSA), the largest cable MSO in the U.S., has decided to deploy its next-generation X1 pay-TV platform in Washington, D.C. Although the date for the launch is yet to be disclosed, Washington will be the company’s eight operating zone after Boston, Colorado, Atlanta, Augusta, Chattanooga, San Francisco and Philadelphia.

Comcast is offering several innovative products, such as the nationwide rollout of X1 services, various home security services like remote controlled heating and cooling patterns, expansion of Wi-Fi network and introduction of new contents for multi-platform on-demand services. The next-generation Web-capable platform called X1, offers a hybrid IP/QAM video gateway with an advanced user interface and the ability to port third-party apps that tie into a cloud-based infrastructure.

Earlier, Comcast launched its major innovative product called Xfinity Streampix, a subscription based on-demand video streaming service. This enhanced the company’s pay-TV offerings, which currently provides traditional TV shows and Xfinity on-demand shows for TV sets and broadband enabled devices. Xfinity Streampix offers instant movie viewing both in and outside homes on multiple platforms like TV sets, computers, and mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.

Nevertheless, the U.S. cable operators are facing fierce competition from telecom service providers including Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ), AT&T Inc. (T) and online video streaming service providers. During 2012, Comcast lost around 336,000 video subscribers such as, Netflix Inc. (NFLX), Hulu.com, YouTube etc. However, on the positive side, though Comcast is still losing basic video subscribers, it has reduced its churn rate even in the sluggish U.S. economy.
