Atmel Corporation (ATML) recently signed a licensing agreement with Exegin Technologies Limited to collaborate for smart metering solutions and use ZigBee networking stacks for smart grid applications in wireless mesh networks. ZigBee networking stacks of Exegin is a robust implementation that allows manufacturers and software developers to easily deploy ZigBee connectivity into their designs.
This collaboration will prove to be beneficial for the customers as they will benefit from the full range of integrated smart metering solutions in the 2.4GHz and sub-GHz bands. In this challenging environment, there is a robust demand for integrated ARM processor-based solutions. With Exegin stacks and Atmel transceivers already deployed in the smart grid solutions, the company continues to add designs including an Atmel SAM4-based ZigBee SE 2.0 solution, which is expected to hit the market in first quarter 2013. Through a continuous pipeline of innovative products, Atmel expects to meet the increasing demand of low-cost, low-power, wireless control and sensor network applications.
Based in San Jose, California, Atmel designs, develops, manufactures and sells integrated circuit (IC) products. These products include microcontrollers, advanced logic, mixed-signal, non-volatile memory and radio frequency (RF) components. The company has released a substantial number of new products in the past few quarters, which is likely to benefit the business during industrial recovery.
The company operates in an intensely competitive landscape that includes big players such as PLX Technology Inc (PLXT) and Silicon Motion Technology Corp (SIMO). Given the competition, constant technological upgrades are the most befitting survival strategies of Atmel.
