HARTFORD, Conn., Aug. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) today announced the appointment of Elizabeth Amato as its Senior Vice President, Human Resources and Organization, succeeding J. Thomas Bowler Jr., who is retiring next year. To ensure a smooth succession, Amato and Bowler will begin a transition period, starting immediately, during which they will jointly carry out the responsibilities of the position.

Amato joined UTC in 1985 at Pratt & Whitney and brings to the role more than 27 years of broad human resources experience at multiple business units. She most recently served as Vice President, Human Resources, for UTC Climate, Controls & Security. She previously held the same position at Carrier, Pratt & Whitney and Sikorsky. Amato holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Davidson College and a law degree from the University of Connecticut.

“Beth’s collaborative working style, deep understanding of UTC and focus on process excellence will serve her well in this new role,” said UTC Chairman & Chief Executive Officer Louis R. Chenevert. “I have the highest confidence in her ability to lead this important function at UTC.”

Bowler will have completed a 33-year career at United Technologies that began in 1979 at the corporation’s Pratt & Whitney unit. He has held the senior human resources positions at Pratt & Whitney and Carrier and previously held executive positions at Carrier’s Asia Pacific Operations, Hamilton Sundstrand, and the former UT Automotive. He was elected to his current position by the UTC Board of Directors in 2007.

“Tom is a superb leader who has had tremendous impact on the company. His many accomplishments include supporting UTC’s highly effective restructuring during the global economic downturn of 2008, as well as his support of last year’s transformational company reorganization. Tom also played an instrumental role in supporting my CEO transition and, more recently, he served as a key member of the Goodrich acquisition negotiation team, supporting completion of the largest acquisition in UTC’s history,” Chenevert said.

“I have had the pleasure of working closely with Tom for the past 11 years, and during that time he has been a key contributor and trusted counselor. His professionalism, experience and leadership will be deeply missed,” Chenevert added.
