Luby’s Shines With ‘Rise Express’; Houston’s Meyer Park Location Finding Early Success With New Fast Casual Breakfast Concept, A First For The Cafeteria Chain

PR Newswire

HOUSTON, July 26, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Luby’s Meyer Park location at 9797A South Post Oak Road in its hometown of Houston has ushered in a new era with the launch of Rise Express. The June 30th, 2012 debut of the single site breakfast concept marks the first time the landmark cafeteria chain, which was founded in San Antonio 65 years ago, has offered a cooked-to-order, fast casual dining component. Rise Express is currently available on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8 until 11 am only, and standard line operations remain unchanged during lunch and dinner hours.

Luby’s has been developing the program and accompanying made-from-scratch menu for approximately six months with corporate chef, Marcos Leal. While the fast casual element is new, a number of Luby’s restaurants, including the former Meyer Park store, which was rebuilt on an adjacent site last summer, have offered or continue to provide a more traditional, cafeteria-style breakfast buffet.

According to COO Peter Tropoli, “In just a short time and without any promotion, we are finding our customers are pleased by the menu and fast casual delivery, two key elements of this incubator concept.”

The Southwest-side location, which is in close proximity to a variety of neighborhoods, retail offerings and business centers, was selected for the broad demographic it attracts, as well as the limited number of area restaurants that cater to the breakfast crowd. Diners place their orders at the Food-to-Go counter, where they receive pagers that alert them once their freshly prepared meal is ready for pick up.

It’s hard not to become a morning person after trying one of the fourteen plates and numerous side items. The menu offers a variety of dishes, all under $7.50, including a number of regional favorites like the Southern Chicken and Waffles and a range of lighter fare options including a bowl of oatmeal with pecans and granola or Skinny Florentine of grilled egg whites with spinach and fresh fruit. Customers can dine on hearty and delicious meals such as the Texan Breakfast Platter, which features three eggs any style, juicy sausage, bacon, hash browns or grits, plus a warm buttermilk biscuit and two fluffy pancakes. Or patrons can put all their eggs in one basket and select the Build Your Own Omelette with choice of bacon, sausage, pork, or turkey sausage and filling options including peppers, onions, tomatoes and/or cheddar cheese. The menu also caters to children with the Kid’s Breakfast Platter that pairs one egg any style, bacon or sausage, hash browns or grits, and a pancake.

Luby’s prides itself in being the most innovative cafeteria company in America. With the addition of Rise Express, the chain continues to deliver convenient, great-tasting, home-style meals at an excellent value in a friendly environment.
