Celebrating Social Change in Communities

NEW YORK, June 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Matrix—the hair care company that supports hairdressers in imagining all they can be and creating positive change in the world through Chairs of Change—announces an exciting new alliance with DoSomething.org, the largest organization in America for individuals age 25 and younger and social change. In 2012, Matrix will sponsor two DoSomething.org Boot Camps in Los Angeles and New York at Sentry Centers, as well as the DoSomething Awards Pre-Party in Hollywood, CA. The partnership serves to highlight Matrix’s commitment to hairdressers who are committed to change, and creates awareness of the beauty industry’s positive impact on the world among DoSomething’s millions of socially-committed, under-25-year-old members.
DoSomething.org harnesses the awesome energy of teens and unleashes it on causes teens care about. Almost every week, DoSomething.org launches a new national campaign. The call to action is always something that has a real impact and doesn’t require money, an adult or a car. Successful, member-driven DoSomething campaigns such as “Give a Spit,” “Teens for Jeans,” and “The Bully Project” focus on everything from cancer to low-income students and bullying, and offer young people the opportunity to lead in their lives and their communities.
Among the most eagerly-anticipated events are the annual Boot Camps, which bring together up to 200 DoSomething.org members for motivation and education on activating their social change ideas. At the conclusion of each Boot Camp, attendees meet with adult “Speed Catchers” for lightning rounds of idea pitching and advice—think Speed Dating meets social change. At the end of the Speed Catching rounds, the three most compelling “pitchers” are awarded $250 to fund their ideas.
This year, selected Matrix employees, stylists and media partners will be among the first to participate as Boot Camp Speed Catchers. The company will also conduct social change activities such as cut-a-thons during the Matrix-sponsored DoSomething.org events, and will introduce the brand to a vast new audience. What’s more, Matrix Senior Vice President and General Manager Colin Walsh is slated to appear at the August Boot Camp as a keynote speaker. Proceedings will be live-streamed to more than 40,000 viewers. Chairs of Change will also have a presence on the DoSomething website and in DoSomething social media efforts.
“Through the Matrix Chairs of change program, we show the world the impact that hairdressers have on the people they touch every day, and as a result, on the world around them,” says Walsh. “When it comes to young people, DoSomething.Org mirrors our commitment and our passion for change. This partnership is a fun way to connect both groups—hairdressers and individuals under 25—to promote connection, mentorship and inspiration. We are looking forward to learning and growing together.”
“Connecting socially conscious Matrix hairdressers with incredible young social doers at the LA and New York City boot camp is the perfect marriage of social change AND good hair!” says Muneer Panjwani, Business Development at DoSomething.org.
