TrustedID Acquires Unsubscribe.com to Expand Consumer Protection

TrustedID now delivers security ratings on over 100,000 social network “apps”

PR Newswire

PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — TrustedID, a leading provider of credit and identity protection services, today announced the acquisition of Unsubscribe.com, creator of the industry’s most advanced social network security for consumers.

In a world in which nearly one seventh of the population has an account on a social network, and nearly a quarter of all Internet usage involves a social network, a new generation of security is required to help consumers protect and manage their online identities.

Many of the potential new security risks on social networks arise from “apps” which access consumer information. On Facebook alone, over 850 million users install apps 20 million times per day.

TrustedID’s acquisition of Unsubscribe.com helps accelerate protection for the security risk posed by these apps. Unsubscribe.com’s Social Monitor™, the most advanced security tool for consumers using social networks, scans apps within Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts to determine their risk. Social Monitor has evaluated over 100,000 apps to date, covering more than 90% of all Facebook app installs.

“Social Monitor is anti-virus for social networks,” said Scott Mitic, CEO of TrustedID. As social networks – and the amount of information shared on them – accelerate, consumers need more tools to safeguard their information. We’re excited to be joining forces with Unsubscribe.com to offer this new protection to consumers globally.”

Social Monitor assesses the security risk of apps based on a wide range of criteria, including the amount of information accessed by the app, the reputation of the app’s developer and feedback from the community. Social Monitor protects consumers by:

  • Providing an overview of an app’s reputation before granting it access to an individual’s information stored on a social network.
  • Indicating the level of risk to users of downloading and using an app.
  • Allowing individuals to remove potentially risky apps with a single click.

“Once consumers realize how much information they’ve shared on social networks, the next thing they want is strong identity protection. Now, as part of TrustedID, our users will have seamless access to the most comprehensive identity protection,” said James Siminoff, CEO of Unsubscribe.com.
