Qualcomm Opting for 4G Innovation (QCOM) (S)

A recent report of Light Reading revealed that Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM) is at present developing chipset to offer push-to-talk functionality within 4G LTE handsets. Push-to-talk is a technology, which is used in walkie-talkies utilizing half-duplex communication method. A regular telephone call needs full duplex communications (dialing a phone number and the dialed person reply to the call) to chat with other party, whereas a push-to-talk technology provides immediate transmissions to be sent to other parties on the network. This walkie-talkie like communications technology is very much useful for emergency workers, such as air traffic controllers, police officers, and construction site workers to name a few.

Recently, Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) started to deploy push-to-talk technology throughout its nationwide 3G CDMA network using the QChat software of Qualcomm. Push-to-talk was popular in the earlier iDEN network of Nextel. Qualcomm, however, declared that this walkie-talkie like feature will not be commercially available on the LTE handsets before late 2015 or early 2016.

Qualcomm remains a beneficiary due to the significant growth of 3G wireless technologies and smartphones in the emerging markets, such as China and India. The next-generation super-fast 4G LTE technology has also boosted Qualcomm. The growing acceptance of LTE technology has prompted the mobile handset manufacturers to develop phones that will be compatible with this network.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm is busy in launching its dual-core Snapdragon MSM 8960 chipset by the end of 2011. Based-on 28-nanometer process technology, MSM 8960 is a dual-core multimode modem that uses the company’s next-generation micro-architecture called “Krait”. MSM 8960 supports EV-DO, dual-carrier HSPA+, and both TDD and FDD versions of LTE. This innovative chipset is optimized for both smartphones and tablets. Using Krait, the consumers will no longer be required to carry battery chargers together with their tablets.
