Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) has received a contract under which the company will upgrade the Department of Navy’s Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (“DoN LAIRCM”) system by delivering Advanced Threat Warning (“ATW”) sensors to the Navy.
Per the contract, Northrop would deliver 24 ATW sensors and 5 processors for integration onboard the CH-53 aircraft as part of the currently fielded DoN LAIRCM system.
The ATW sensor is form-fit and A-kit compatible with the currently deployed DoN LAIRCM missile warning system. It is an all-in-one sensor package that has a four-in-one capability which includes missile warning, laser warning, hostile fire detection and sensor video.
The Navy’s DoN LAIRCM system protects aircrews and aircraft from battlefield threats. This up gradation will increase threat detection capabilities of warfighters and will allow early warning of heat-seeking missile attacks, small arms fire, medium caliber machine gun fire, anti-aircraft artillery and unguided rocket attacks.
Northrop Grumman's LAIRCM system is installed or is being scheduled for installation on several hundred military aircraft across the Department of Defense to protect approximately 50 different types of large fixed-wing transports and rotary-wing platforms from infrared missile attacks.
Northrop Grumman offers a strong program portfolio positioned to take advantage of focus areas in the defense space, an improving balance sheet and an ongoing share repurchase program.
However, the positives are overshadowed by apprehension regarding defense cutbacks on high-cost platform programs,over-exposure to the DoD budget, lower backlog, cost over-runs and reductions in Afghanistan and Iraq operations. The company presently retains a short-term Zacks #3 Rank (Hold) that corresponds with our long-term Neutral recommendation on the stock.
