TRW Automotive Holdings Corp.’s (TRW) continuous investment in upgrading its products has led it to grab a major new contract with a leading North American vehicle manufacturer. As per the contract, TRW will supply the company with its highly advanced camera systems solutions, one of the major new generation products by the company. The camera systems imply the company's strong technology and leadership position in the field of active and passive safety.
These new camera systems are based on a scalable camera design that is well-equipped to deliver lane departure warning and active lane keeping functions. Other advance features like forward collision warning, pedestrian detection and traffic sign recognition can also be installed if required. In addition, vehicle longitudinal control functions including full automatic emergency braking are also possible with the product when combined with a radar like TRW's 24 GHz AC 100.
These advanced safety functions, which are yet in the production stage, are expected to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities. Supply of the products is scheduled to begin from 2013. The company has already entered into a number of production contracts in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific for its camera systems, thereby reflecting the growing demand globally for active safety functionality.
In the first quarter of 2011, TRW Automotive earned a profit of $292 million or $2.21 per share, improving substantially from $209 million or $1.65 per share in the same quarter last year. Sales also rose 15% to $4.11 billion driven by an increase in volume. The company expects full year 2011 sales in the range of $15.7 billion−$16.0 billion, including $3.9 billion for the second quarter of the year.
